Have you ever heard something said that sparked a quick trip down memory lane? That recently happened to me when my husband said something to me. It made me think of the old TV shows, I’ve Got a Secret, To Tell the Truth, and Truth or Consequences.
The idea behind these popular game shows in the forties and fifties was to “have the truth” come forth. In one, it was okay to mislead the panel as it was their job to ask the right questions to “get the truth”. One of the most memorable questions was, “Is it bigger than a breadbox?” Little by little they asked enough questions to “discover the truth” in the allotted time OR not.
Of course, my mind began to drift to other things. Does that happen to you? One thing leads to another and once you come up for air, you are a mile away from your original thought! When that happens I usually make some remark to my husband who looks at me like I just dropped in from an alien planet! But, when I return from memory lane, I could easily tell him exactly how I got from point A to B.
What is truth?
This memory lane trip took me through three game shows and then to the question,” What is truth?” Of course, I am not the only one who asked that. Many famous people have posed this question. I began to think of a special day when a high ruling official in the Roman Empire asked that very question to one of the Jewish rabbis, Yeshua (English: Jesus).

As recorded in John 18, Pilate then asked Jesus the $64,000 question (another game show), “What is truth?” That question still rings in the hearts and minds of people all across the world today. Many believe they have found it in various sources. Some even say, “truth is whatever you want it to be; your truth may not be my truth”.
In my youth, I fell for lots of “isms” while I was earnestly seeking for truth. Once during my quest, I dabbled in the occult, fancying myself to ascertain ALL truth through my spirit guide. Still I wasn’t satisfied, until one day I stumbled across the following Bible verse that finally ended my search and gave me peace:
Jesus is truth!
Whoa! That was bold. He went on to say, “You know the TRUTH and the TRUTH will set you free.” So, I’m thinking: I know Jesus (TRUTH) therefore, I can be set free…. free from what?
- Lies
- Confusion
- Pride
- Sin
- Wounds
And the list goes on.
Am I free, I ask myself. After a thoughtful pause, I say aloud to my husband, “I’m free!” This is when I get the, “are you an alien look?” since he has not been in on my trip down memory lane. We both laugh as he knows I do this frequently. This time it was wonderful to remember and be reassured that because Jesus paid the price for my sin, I could be set free. Yes. It was a long journey to reach that point but I’m so thankful I did. Because, if Pilate or anyone else asked me, what is truth, I could quickly say, JESUS!
And you? Could you say that too? If not, why not? Stay on your journey. Read the Bible with an open mind. You also will find freedom like I did. Ask the Holy Spirit of God to show you the truth.
Prayer
“Father, show me the TRUTH as I read your Word. Open my eyes that have been blinded by Satan’s system of lies, so that I can renounce them and embrace the only TRUTH that can set me free.”
