That’s not his last name. But that’s his girl and it’s hers. When I picked up these shirts and saw that the name had been added to the back, I’ll admit my heart sunk for a minute. It felt wrong to ask Chris to wear my late husband’s last name. I worried how he’d respond. I broached the subject carefully. He never hesitated. “Baby it’s fine. It’s her last name and I love her so I’m happy to wear it”. I felt the tears rise in my throat. He loves her. Regardless of her last name. He didn’t help create her but he chooses to be her Dad every single day. He is the only Daddy she will ever remember. He is wrapped around her little finger. This is the night of her first game so he took his shirt to work with him this morning so he would have it to wear for her. When she was hit with a pitch in the last inning, I promise he wanted to climb the fence to get to her. They may not share the same last name, but she has his whole heart and he has hers. And that’s what matters most. #nothislastname#stilldaddysgirl
Then there is the bond between these two girls. Their mamas’ babies. Their bond melts my heart. Please don’t tell the big one she’s twice the age of the little one. It doesn’t matter to them. Last night this little girl had an important game. She was going to pitch in a game for the very first time. Her hero just happened to be playing on the field right beside her so they got in a pre-game chat.
“Step off the mound and take a deep breath between every pitch Anna Britt. You got this! I’m proud of you. You can do this. If I was catching for you, I’d make you look GOOD!” said KA, which was met with timid words as the fears of a little girl who had never done this before tumbled out. I didn’t hear exactly what Anna Britt said to KA but I will never forget what KA said back to AB. She leaned down so she was eye to eye with Anna Britt and she said “if anyone says anything to you, you tell them Kathrynanne Ivy is your best friend and they can deal with me!”.
This morning this moment and her words were washing over my heart again. How many of us need this in our lives? We need to know that there is someone who loves us so fiercely and wants to protect us so much they’re willing to deal with those who come against us. We need these friends who are willing to go to war with us and for us. How many of us also need to be reminded of the One who always does? There is One who leans in close and looks us in the eye. The One says I’m your Cornerstone and whoever comes against you comes against Me. Step off the mound for a minute. Take a deep breath. You can do this. You’ve got this…because He’s got you. #mommysgirl#faithonthefield
