Ephesians 5:11 Do not participate in the useless deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them.
Halloween is one day of the year when people from different cultures and backgrounds can agree that your home can be decorated with ghosts, goblins, and gore. People will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on becoming the scariest house on the block. The scarier the better! The town becomes drenched in witch hats and masks of Freddy, Jason, or the innocent victims of a gruesome murder.
Where is God glorified in the blood and gore of the spirit of fear?
The spirit of fear is to be rejected by the sons and daughters of God. We are called to call it out and cast it out and fan the flames of power, love, and self-control. Instead, it excites many because it is “not real,” and those who proclaim Jesus as Lord and Savior pay the very spirit to torment them and their family and friends. The spirit of fear is born from the one who kills, steals, and destroys.
The Bible says: There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, a soothsayer, one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who consults the dead. 12 For whoever does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these detestable things, the Lord your God is going to drive them out before you. 13 You are to be blameless before the Lord your God.
However, I have witnessed the women in church wear witches’ hats on their annual fall festival days. I’ve seen a church set up a room with a crystal ball and psychic for their walk through the haunted house.
We are to have no relationship with darkness.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 Do not be mismatched with unbelievers; for what do righteousness and lawlessness share together, or what does light have in common with darkness? 15 Or what harmony does Christ have with Belial, or what does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 Or what agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said,
“I will dwell among them and walk among them;
And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
17 Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord.
“And do not touch what is unclean;
And I will welcome you.
18 And I will be a father to you,
And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,”
Says the Lord Almighty
Coming out of the ways of the world can cause some nervousness at first. Something you have always done or been a part of and then stopping can seem weird, but I assure you that God will replace what you set down for HIM.
Ways to walk out:
You don’t have to make a big deal or display or post about not participating. When others have asked me, I have just said, No, I’m not dressing up this year. I took the decorations I had been saving and set them out by the road. Will you be giving out candy? No, it’s been a rough week, month, and year, so we won’t be giving out candy this year. Will you be taking your son trick-or-treating? No, we talk about how we choose not to fellowship with scary things and also teach him that his dad and I stand firm on our beliefs with the Lord and encourage him and his mom and her husband to find their own way to the Christian beliefs. Are you in a home where your spouse may still want to participate? Or have young kids who have grown accustomed to it? I believe that God will give you the way out of temptation.
1 Corinthians 10:13: No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
Walking in the ways of Christ is not always easy. Sometimes, we are mocked and come against because our beliefs line up with scripture and not the world. So, take it one moment at a time.
